This kawara (roof tile) is one of the roof tiles were used for the reconstruction of the Japanese house. It is made of clay, formed in a curved dome shape embellished to resemble a face, and it is silver gray in color. The face has large eyebrows, circular blank eyes, bulging cheeks, and ferocious teeth and fangs. Though it is a modern tile, it was made in the traditional manner. This is just one of several styles of tile used in the house. When assembled, the curves of thekawara tiles evoke waves, a visual effect that would continue from one house to the next.
