This photo album has a cover decorated with a violet flower in a green vase and some Japanese text that reads "Stars in Heaven, Flowers in the Ground, Love in People" on the right-hand side. The spine is tied with a green string. The album is a reproduction of the family photo album of a girl named Ikuko Kawai from Yamagata, Japan, and includes photographs from major life events of several generations of the Kawai family (graduations, travels, weddings, births).
The Kawai family donated this album, along with kimono, chopsticks, and manga, for a Boston Children's Museum MATChBox curriculum kit so that American children could learn about Japanese families. MATChBox (Materials and Activities for Teachers and Children) kits, developed by the Boston Children's Museum in 1964, included hands-on learning materials and lesson plans provided to schools for use in the classroom.
